En conjunt, la producció d’electricitat i calor, el transport i la construcció representen quasi la meitat de les emissions mundials de gasos d’efecte hivernacle (IPCC, 2014). La substitució de fonts d’energia basades en combustibles fòssils per fonts renovables, però, podrien reduir aquestes emissions per contribuir a la mitigació del canvi climàtic. Alfons Cornella, consultor en innovació i fundador de l’empresa Infonomia, creu que “l’adaptació a aquesta nova realitat no és només una necessitat sinó també una oportunitat per impulsar un canvi positiu en la societat i en el medi ambient”.

L’estudi Empleo y transición ecológica 2023, realitzat pel Ministeri per la Transició Ecològica i el Repte Demogràfic amb la col·laboració de la Fundació Biodiversitat i Oficina espanyola de canvi climàtic, revela que Espanya depèn en més d’un 75% de fonts d’energia importades per satisfer les seves necessitats, i que, per tant, les renovables són l’única resposta possible per l’autosuficiència energètica. Paral·lelament, l’utilització d’energia neta va lligada a l’economia del país. Segons dades l’Agència Internacional de l’Energia (AIE), les renovables instal·lades a Espanya entre 2021 i 2023 generaran un estalvi acumulat de 10.000 milions d’euros.
És per això que aquest sector crearà nous llocs de treball. L’informe Renewable Energy and Jobs: Annual Review 2023 de l’Agència Internacional d’Energies Renovables (IRENA) calcula que aquesta àrea donarà feina a un total de 42 milions de treballadors a tot el món fins al 2030, una xifra que augmentaria fins als 122 milions el 2050. I a escala nacional l’estudi del Pla Nacional Integrat d’Energia i Clima (PNIEC) 2021-2030 calcula que la branca generarà entre 107.000 i 135.000 llocs de treball a l’any fins al 2030, d’entre els quals destaquen els muntadors d’instal·lacions energètiques, gestió i manteniment, dissenys i fabricació d’equips.
